Welcome friends to our Meet the B-Line series as Dot (co-worker, foodie, content-creator extraordinaire) and I give an inside view of the restaurants, bars and distilleries that make up Northern Kentucky’s self-guided bourbon experience, The B-Line. Here we will taste the food, try the drinks, and give our personal feedback on each stop. To kick off the series, we begin our journey at Covington, Kentucky’s Rich’s Proper Food and Drink.
Located on Madison Avenue in Covington, Kentucky, Rich’s Proper Food and Drink is in the former Rich’s Gruen Watches space. Named in honor of the original occupant, Rich’s Proper kept the original Rich’s sign, showcasing the history of the area. This casual and cozy bar and restaurant features tasty Southern inspired cuisine with vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options, crafted cocktails, craft beer, wine and of course, an extensive bourbon collection. ICYDK, all the restaurants here on The B-Line must keep a selection of at least 50 bourbons on hand, and all the bars have to offer a minimum of 100 different bourbons.
Rich’s Proper is open seven days a week where you can enjoy a wonderful lunch and dinner menu! Here is a small taste of the options available that Dot and I tried for dinner. For all my fellow brunch babes, stop in on Sundays as they are serving up a great menu featuring your favorites like Shrimp and Grits, a Brunch Burger and Eggs Benedict just to name of few. If your next question is, but will they be serving Mimosas and Bloody Marys? Do you even have to ask? Would it be brunch if they didn’t?
What We Drank
Rich’s Sazerac – “Old Fashioned’s Evil Twin”
Rich’s twist on a Sazerac, this crafted cocktail is made with Old Forester Rye, Peychaud’s Bitters, sugar, Copper and King’s Barrel Aged Absinthe and lemon zest. Dot loved this smooth, tasty cocktail and was excited that she could really taste the Absinthe.
Hot Bourbon Cider – “Warm and Boozy”
Do you know that feeling when you just can’t get warm, so you drink a hot beverage, and it just touches your soul and warms you through and through? This was that feeling. Made with Four Roses Bourbon and house spiced apple cider, you could taste the sweetness of the apple, the pucker of lemon and the smoothness of the bourbon. I find that when you add bourbon to sweet drinks, you often lose the taste of bourbon. Not the case here. This drink is bourbon forward and delicious.
What We Ate
Dot and I tried an appetizer and two entrées.
Buffalo Cauliflower “Wings”
I know what you’re thinking but hear me out. No, it’s not chicken, but it is a great way to get those veggies that everyone tells you that you are supposed to be eating and they truly are good. Dot said they are some of the tastiest she’s had in the Cincy Region. These breaded, crispy, and marinated cauliflower bites are served with carrots, celery and a buffalo dipping sauce. So basically, it’s healthy and you can feel good about yourself knowing you added a vegetable to your meal! This dish is also vegan, vegetarian and gluten free.
Shrimp and Grits
Made with Gulf shrimp, Haricot Vert (French Green Beans), local mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, pimento cheese, a bourbon butter sauce and local grits, Dot loved this dish. She said the green beans were fresh, the grits were creamy and the dish itself was full of spice, a touch of tang and overall, delicious. Look at those vibrant colors!
Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich
We are in a state known for its world-famous fried chicken. Rest in peace Colonel! Plus, if you have read any of my previous blog posts, you know I am pro-chicken. So of course, I tried their Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich. No regrets! The outside of the chicken breast is crunchy, with a spice and yet it also has a great sweet and tangy flavor to it as well. Also, shout to the golden and well-seasoned fries.
Dot and I enjoyed our experience at Rich’s Proper. The inside is warm and cozy, the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the food and drinks were delectable. While Dot and I did not try any, Rich’s Proper offers fresh oysters daily. Stop by Wednesday evenings for Oyster Night from 4-10pm! Also, if you enjoyed a bourbon cocktail or had a glass straight and would like to take some home or give a gift, ask your server about their bottle shop and the bourbons available for purchase!
We hope you have enjoyed this article and encourage you and your loved ones to stop by Rich’s. Try their food, have a drink and make memories to last a lifetime at this B-Line stop.
